Politics in America has degraded to the point of locker room humor and sandbox tantrums. Come on America, have a little class and a little self respect.
Campaigns for politicians from state offices, all the way up the scale to the Presidential elections, have designed their strategies to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It has reached a point that even the producers of the Jerry Springer show are jealous of the freak-show and its carnival barkers. I guess the cumulative effect of reality television has finally left its mark.
Most of what I write about is analysis of trends, and this is a trend that disgusts me as an American. Have our standards slipped so low that we will sit back and accept these campaigns, shoddy and biased news coverage, and distractions from issues? Have Americans lost all respect for our Country, our processes, and our history? In case Americans have forgotten the basic premise of our founding, here is a refresher: our elected officials represent and work for us.
Stand back and look at the situation objectively. Political campaigns think you are so stupid that they have to communicate with you at a kindergarten level in order to make their point. Just an observation folks, but this is as much a reflection on us, the citizens, as it is about the politicians.
We are to blame for the dismal level of discourse and leadership in the country because we have allowed it to happen on our watch; end of story!
I find myself, and all of my fellow citizens, guilty of this crime. We have been negligent in our duty as citizens for decades. As the self-proclaimed judge in this matter, I have identified the crime, judged our guilt, and will now lay out the terms of the restitution that is the basis of our sentence. Don’t worry, there is no cash fee to be paid; as I see it, you are already paying the highest penalty imaginable.
The terms of your sentence? Regain your respect and rediscover your duties as an American Citizen. Demand only the highest level of discourse, the highest level of service to Country, and the highest level of honesty. Reward those leaders who uphold these standards, and immediately punish those who forget who they serve. Your mind, your voice, and your vote are all the tools that you will need to complete your sentence.
And the carnival barkers that I mentioned earlier, they are the press; don’t let their antics and quest for ratings influence your values and decisions. The press has an important role in our society, but they have lost all touch with the reality of their responsibilities. Don’t worry though, they are the easiest problem to correct. When the press fails in their duty to accurately portray the news and hold politicians accountable, you have the power to punish them by refusing to consume their product; they will get the message quickly as their funding disappears and they hear your voice.
As we near the general election cycle, I want serious and honest debate about the key issues and not distractions to pull our attention away from difficult discussions. As for me, there are only three main issues that I want to hear about in national political debate; defense of our country, defense of our Constitution, and the responsible stewardship of our national finances. Convince me that you are the person most capable of delivering on those three issues, and you will have my vote.
If you want to lose my vote quickly, focus on identity politics and bogus issues designed to divide and distract the electorate. If you play that game, I will know that you will never be a leader, just a politician; and in my book, that is the lowest life-form in existence.
