The creatures are kept at bay due to the walls of the fort; the walls protecting inhabitants that see the creatures circling the fort. Occasionally,a creature finds their way through or over the wall and the inhabitants cower in fear. The inhabitants do not like living within the walls of the fort, but know that the minute the walls come down, the wilderness will quickly consume them, and return them to the wilderness. Their destiny is sealed and the walls will fall. Years from now, all evidence of the walls will be lost.
